Build in public is not enough: you need daily outbound

GTM Gate Team6 min read

Posting a daily update about your progress feels like marketing. For most early-stage SaaS founders, it is closer to a diary that a few hundred people happen to see - and it rarely converts into paying customers on its own.

Why build in public underperforms expectations

Build in public works well for visibility and community, but the audience it reaches is mostly other builders - people who are interested in your process, not necessarily your product's target customer. Unless your buyer happens to be another SaaS founder, the overlap between your audience and your market can be small.

It also has a passive structure: you publish, and you wait. There is no direct ask, no specific person being invited to try the product, and no mechanism forcing a response.

Build in public alone

Broadcasts to whoever happens to be watching. No specific ask, no guaranteed response, mostly reaches builders.

Daily outbound

Reaches specific people who match your target profile, with a direct ask and a measurable response rate.

"Public updates build an audience. Outbound builds a customer base. Most SaaS founders need the second one first."

Use both, in the right order

Build in public is not wrong - it compounds over time and builds trust. But it should sit alongside daily outbound, not replace it. A realistic daily split for an early-stage SaaS founder: one public post, plus 10 targeted DMs to people who actually match the product's target audience.
